Are you a student wondering how to ask for an informational interview for class? I get lots of emails asking for help with assignments.
Most emails read like this:
“Dear Ms. Jones, I’m a student at [school]. I’m required to interview a designer for my assignment. The questions are below. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards, [Name].”
Hmm. I assume Name found me after a thorough 5-second Google search. I finished school ages ago, and I’m not sitting around looking for homework. I’ve got work to do and Schitt’s Creek to watch! I do not feel exhilarated.
A better approach:
“Hi Jessica, I’m a student at [school.] I just found your work and I’m inspired by your [say why specifically, proving you’ve done at least a little homework.] I’m taking [topic of class], and we were asked to interview a designer we admire. I picked you! I know you’re busy. But could you spare a few minutes to help with my questions, either by email or voice memo if it’s easier? I’d need your response by [date]. Really grateful for your time, [Name.]
Flattery will get you everywhere, folks. Plus people have different communication styles, so it’s good to give options. And don’t forget the due date, so I don’t have to guess how soon you’ll need answers. No need to be super formal, and bonus points if you can make me laugh.
If you do need graphic design interview answers, I’ve made a Q&A page with questions other students have sent in. Check it out, and if what you want to know isn’t covered there, send me an email. If you copy and paste my template, I probably won’t even notice I wrote it myself. 🙂
