New holiday ribbon designs

Red black and blue Christmas ribbon

My latest designs for my client Renaissance Ribbons are now in stores. They requested holiday motifs, so I made poinsettias, deer in a forest, retro argyle, and some funny Santas with tiny feet. These are available by the yard or the spool for trimming holiday projects.

If you’re into embroidery, how about making a little yeti felt ornament stuffed with a bit of batting? He sports a ribbon scarf and would look cute on somebody’s Christmas tree. Download the free DIY pattern here.

2016 Presidential debate bingo game

Presidential third debate bingo

In honor of the third and final presidential debate on Wednesday, October 19, I’ve designed a printable bingo game. My annual Oscar bingo set is an ongoing tradition, but this special election year deserves a special edition. Do your civic duty and download the Presidential Debate Bingo PDF.

Print out the number of pages you need and play with friends in the comfort of your living room. Debate Bingo pairs nicely with The Federalist Cabernet. Suggested attire is a red sweater.

2016 Oscar bingo and party printables

2016 Oscar bingo game

It’s that time again! My eighth annual FREE Oscar® bingo game is ready. Lounge on your couch and play it with friends to make the Academy Awards more fun. Bring on the tears, flubs, and stumbles! The Oscars ceremony is Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016.

Download the FREE file:
2016 Oscar bingo game PDF

How the game works:
There are 20 different game cards in the downloadable PDF file. I take care to arrange each card carefully; the bingo cards are not randomly generated. I’m aiming to make a bingo not too easy but not too hard.

– Save the PDF to your computer
– Open it in Adobe Reader
– Print the number of pages you need at 100% size

(Here’s the metallic gold paper I used. It works with laser printers and ballpoints or Sharpies.)

The first person to mark off five squares in a line wins. It could be a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line. There’s no freebie in the middle, so you’ve got your work cut out for you.

Play with friends:
Give movie candy or gift card prizes to winners at your party, or play long distance with friends by text or tweet. (I’m @howaboutorange on Twitter and Instagram, #haobingo).

Fallibility disclaimer:
Like every year, my big disclaimer applies: Someone might get a bingo ten minutes into the telecast, or maybe your group won’t have a winner at all because my psychic powers have failed this year. Fingers crossed.

More printable goodies in my shop:
To make your viewing party extra glamorous, I’ve also designed a matching ballot and a pack of decorations, including posters, wine and beer labels, napkin rings, stemware flags, cupcake toppers, and more. Find all the goodies in my Etsy shop.

Enjoy!

Free bookmarks: download and print

Bookmarks

My latest fabric collection for Cloud9 Fabrics, Typography, is now in stores. It’s covered with words and letters. Know what else is full of words and letters? Books. Maybe you need some printable bookmarks designed to match these prints. Just download the PDF, print on card stock, and trim out the bookmarks. If you’re an overachiever, you could laminate them, punch a hole, and make a tassel from embroidery floss. Download the file here.

Big typographic wall art tutorial

DIY typography wall art

I’ve been waiting to find something wonderful to hang on the empty chimney wall in our office. I finally got tired of searching and painted a DIY placeholder. It will do the job until I either win the lottery or find an affordable, huge… something. After posting a photo on Facebook, I had requests for a tutorial, so here’s how to make your own “wonderful” typographic wall art.

You will need:
A 30″ x 40″ canvas or other surface to paint on
Paint
Paintbrush
Tape
Graphite transfer paper
Ballpoint pen
Ruler
Printer
This downloadable template:

Tiled version (Sixteen 8.5″ x 11″ pages with 0.75″ overlap) OR
– Single page version (30″ x 40″ if you can print this big!)

(Do not use file for commercial purposes or financial gain; personal wall beautifying only.)

What to do:

1) Print out the template PDF at 100% size.

2) Tape the sheets together to form one large template.

Graphic tracing paper

3) Trace letters onto a canvas using graphite tracing paper placed under your template. Drawing the lines with a pen and ruler will help you keep track of where you’ve traced and keep your lines straight. Taping the papers to the canvas will help keep the design from shifting.

Trace the outlines

4) After tracing, go back and beef up any hard-to-see areas. It’s no fun painting when you can’t see your lines!

5) Paint the design in your favorite colors. I’ve used both artist acrylics and latex house paint with good results on canvas. Depending on the quality of your paint, you may need two coats to get perfect, even coverage.

6) Hang your wonderful masterpiece.

2015 Oscar bingo and printable party kit

Free Oscar bingo game 2015

[UPDATE: Sign up here to get the free 2016 Oscar Bingo Game!]

My free Oscar® bingo game is back by popular demand. For seven years running, I’ve made a game you can play while you watch the Academy Awards telecast at home. It’s lots of fun, and has even been featured on ABC TV. Grab these goodies before the Oscars this Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015!

How the game works:
There are 20 different game cards in the downloadable bingo file. I take care to arrange each card carefully; the bingo cards are not randomly generated. I’m aiming to make a bingo not too easy but not too hard.

– Save the PDF to your computer
– Open it in Adobe Reader
– Print the number of pages you need.

The first person to mark off five squares in a line wins. It could be a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line. There’s no freebie in the middle, so you’ve got your work cut out for you. Give fun prizes to winners at your party or play long distance with friends by text or tweet (#oscarbingo; I’m @howaboutorange).

Like every year, my big disclaimer applies: Someone might get a bingo ten minutes into the telecast, or maybe your group won’t have a winner at all because my psychic powers have failed this year. Fingers crossed!

2014 Oscar ballot and bingo game

free 2014 Oscars bingo cards

I just finished my sixth annual Oscar bingo and ballot set, free for the downloading. Whether you’re hosting a viewing party on Sunday or lounging with the fam, nothing makes the Academy Awards better than some friendly competition.

To use the ballot: Print one for each guest and have them mark their predictions before the show starts. The person with the most correct guesses wins.

To use the bingo cards: 20 different game cards are included in the PDF. Print out the number of pages you’ll need for your guests. The first person to mark off five squares in a line wins. It could be a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line. (This year I removed the center “free” space to make you work a little harder.)

Download the 2014 Oscar ballot here

And like every year, a disclaimer: Maybe someone will get a bingo ten minutes into the telecast, or maybe your group won’t have a winner at all because my psychic powers have failed. Best of luck!

Father’s Day printable freebies

Printable Father's Day cards

Inspired by Penguin Scores, a 1949 sheet music series with patterned covers by Jan Tschichold, I created some free Father’s Day cards in a similar style. Print your favorite onto a sheet of cardstock, cut out the card, and fold in half. Cards are 4.25″ x 5.5″ after folding, designed to fit into a standard A2 envelope.

Free printable stationery

I sent out the link in my last newsletter, but in case you missed it and would like to print up some stationery, download this. The PDF has four pages— two sheets of note paper and two different envelopes you can cut out and assemble. Print on white paper for a classic look, or try neon or kraft paper for something different. Mix or match scallops and stripes.

Easter egg designs with temporary tattoo paper

DIY Pantone Easter eggs

Last Easter I made Pantone-inspired eggs. I typed up a label to match each egg color, flipped the file so the text was backwards, and printed them on inkjet temporary tattoo paper.

Printable Easter egg decals

This year I made egg decals from little hand-drawn flowers I’d scanned and colored. I printed them on tattoo paper again and stuck them on. It’s easy!

If you’d like to make your own floral eggs, feel free to download my file here.

I used Silhouette brand tattoo paper that I purchased at my local PaperSource last year, but you can also get similar stuff from DecalPaper.com.

Following the application instructions on the package, print the designs on the special paper and prepare the tattoos. Trim around the edges of each design, and then place the decal on an egg. Or your arm. Hold a wet cloth on it for 10 seconds and pull off the paper backing. Smooth out any wrinkles with your finger.

Happy Easter!
